POLE SAFETY

As a pole dance enthusiast, the pole is the most important piece of equipment that you will invest in.  If purchasing a pole for home use, think carefully about which type of pole is suitable for the room or area that will be utilized for your pole.

SELECTING YOUR POLE

You may think that any pole is acceptable but this is not the case.  The pole needs to be the correct diameter of 55mm or less.  It is easier to work on a thinner pole but you may experience some difficulty with moves when graduating to a wider pole.

Your pole needs to be made of the correct metal, so either stainless steel, chrome plated, titanium plated or brass would be ideal.

You will need to decide if your pole preference would be for a fully removable pole, a semi-permanent pole, a permanent pole or a stage pole.  Each has its merits specific to the room dimensions that you will be using.

Do not be persuaded by offers of a less expensive pole or installation because you can almost guarantee that if you buy cheap you will buy again, in addition to placing yourself at risk.  Call the company and inquire about pole liability insurance, if it is offered than the company is reputable.

Happy Poling and stay safe!!

Is This Mistake Keeping You From Owning Your Own Studio

What is it that keeps some dancers from making their dreams a reality?

Patty has been pole dancing for 3 years. She has competed regionally and regularly receives accolades on her performances. She has a background in Pilates and anatomy and is very good at breaking down pole dance moves into easy-to-understand steps.

Patty dreams of owning her own studio. She has occasionally taught a friend or two out of her home and, once in awhile, the studio where she poles will ask her to sub for a beginners class, but she has never taught regularly.

She thinks about it all the time, though. What it would be like to have students eager to learn from her, to see their progress and know she had a hand in helping them get there.

When Patty goes to pole competitions and events, she is amazed at the women she meets who have started their own studios. They seem impossibly brave to her – she figures they must have a lot of money or a great deal of business education.

One day, she says, one day that will be me …

The #1 mistake so many dancers make is getting lost in dreamland.

It’s not enough to be the best. It’s not enough to study all different kinds of aerial arts. To make the leap from dreaming to being, you have to decide you’re going to do it. Successful pole instructors know they have to take action.

You have to decide to teach a pole dance class.
You have to decide to do pole parties.

You have to decide to scout out a studio space.

Yes, there are a lot of steps to getting a pole business off the ground. Yes, there is a lot you will have to learn. But dreaming about it won’t get you there.

If you want it, do it. If you dream of it, become it.

You decide.
Do you dream of having your own studio? What is keeping you from making that dream a reality?

Jennifer Michelle helps pole studio owners and instructors create a marketing strategy to bring in more students and buffer against competition. For more information, visit http://www.JMichelleMarketing.com. Jennifer also owns PoleSkivvies pole dance clothing at http://PoleSkivvies.com.

Question for Dr. Suarez

Dr. Suarez,

I've started taking pole dance classes and a friend of mine has expressed an interest in coming with me. Which would be great except that she's about 2 or 3 months pregnant (with twins), I've been purposefully not giving her the correct information about class because I'm worried about how it will affect her pregnancy.  So I thought I should just ask, will she be ok at pole class or should she wait until after she's given birth to start classes?

Candyce

Answer from Dr. Suarez:

Hi Candyce,

Exercising during pregnancy is good for your friend and her babies and it does not increase miscarriage risk and low to normal pregnancy risks.
Things to be avoided are:

1. Breathlessness as might occur if she exercises to the point that she can't catch her breath--means babies have to work harder to breath as well;

2. Contact sports--martial arts, football, ultimate fighting, football, wrestling--though I don't think this may apply to her;

3. Exercising on her belly after the third trimester

Pole Dancing, though vigorous and challenging, can be managed just as any new exercise routine before or after pregnancy. Start slowly, take breaks, drink lots of fluid and stop when the body says to stop.

If she has never done any pole dancing then things like inversions, climbs or other difficult moves is not something she is going to be attempting on her first day but something she should avoid during the pregnancy because of risk of injury. Body strengthening, sculpting and simple pole dance moves will benefit her and her babies and it's a fun way to exercise.

That being said, however, she needs to check in with her OB, give him or her details about the class, including the use of her abdominal muscles for just about anything on the pole, and make sure that he or she clears her for participation first.

Then, I say, pole away!

Warm Regards,
Yolanda Suarez
